The Claude and ChatGPT apps (web, desktop and mobile) connect through custom connectors. They sign in with the user's Omeka account; they cannot use API keys.
Before you start
- Your site must use HTTPS and be reachable from the internet: these apps connect from their own servers, not from your computer. A site that only runs on your own machine will be reported as not working.
- Let apps connect by signing in must be on in the module settings (it is by default).
- Your Claude or ChatGPT plan must allow custom connectors. In ChatGPT this is developer mode, available on some plans.
Connect
- In Claude, open Settings > Connectors and choose Add custom connector. In ChatGPT, add a custom MCP server in developer mode.
- Enter your site's MCP address, for example
https://archive.example.org/mcp, and leave the OAuth client fields empty. - The app sends you to your Omeka site. Log in, check the permissions, and choose Allow. Untick Create and edit to give the app read-only access.
Try it by asking: "Using the Omeka connector, what is in this collection?"
What the app can do
Chat apps get the same tools as coding agents, except that they cannot reach files on your computer: they can add media from web addresses, but not upload local files. See Working with an agent for what to ask.
Disconnect
Choose Disconnect next to the app on Admin > MCP connections, or remove the connector in the app's settings.
