Getting Started

Installation

Requirements

  • Omeka S 4.0 or later
  • PHP 8.1 or later, with the curl extension
  • HTTPS. The Claude and ChatGPT apps connect from their own servers, so your site must also be reachable from the internet for them; coding agents only need to reach it from the computer they run on.

Installing

  1. Copy the McpServer folder into your Omeka S modules/ directory.
  2. Log in to the Omeka S admin as a Global Administrator.
  3. Go to Admin > Modules and click Install next to MCP Server.

The MCP endpoint is live immediately at your site's address followed by /mcp, for example https://archive.example.org/mcp. An MCP connections link appears in the admin menu for every user.

The module creates five database tables: one for one-time upload addresses and four for OAuth sign-ins (apps, authorization codes, approvals and tokens).

Check the web server

Open Admin > Modules > MCP Server > Configure and click Run check under Authorization header check. Some Apache setups with PHP-FPM remove the Authorization header before it reaches PHP, which stops API keys and sign-ins from working. If the check fails, add this line to your Apache configuration or to Omeka's .htaccess:

CGIPassAuth On

If Omeka is installed in a subdirectory rather than at the root of the domain, apps find the sign-in settings through a fallback address inside the subdirectory. Most clients support it; if one cannot sign in, use an API key with it instead.

Uninstalling

Uninstalling removes the module's tables and settings. Connected apps lose access, and outstanding upload addresses stop working. Items, media and other content created through the module are not affected.
