Who can use it
Anyone allowed to change a site's theme settings: global administrators, the site's owner, and users given the Admin permission on the site (User permissions). Others get a "permission denied" page.
Opening it
For a site whose theme the customizer supports, any of these opens it:
- Customize in the site's admin menu;
- Customize with live preview on the site's Theme page, next to Edit theme settings;
- Customize with live preview at the top of the theme settings page;
- the Customize this site button (a palette) at the bottom left of the site's public pages, shown only to people who may change the site, which opens the preview on the page you were viewing;
- the address
/admin/site/s/<site-slug>/customize.
To start the preview on a particular page, add it to the address: /admin/site/s/<site-slug>/customize?url=/s/<site-slug>/item/42. Only pages of the same site are accepted. Close then goes back to that page.
If the site uses another theme, the customizer says so and links to the Theme page.
The screen
| Area | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Left panel | Close (back to the page you opened the customizer from, or else to the site's Theme page), then the theme's settings in collapsible sections, as on the theme settings page. At the bottom: the number of unpublished changes, Discard changes and Publish. |
| Toolbar | Preview width (Desktop, Tablet, Phone), color scheme (Light, Dark), the title of the page shown, and Open in new tab. |
| Preview | Your site, with your draft applied. |
On narrow windows the panel sits above the preview.
