Conformance target
The theme is designed to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA, which includes the WCAG 2.1 AA level required by the U.S. ADA Title II rule and by EN 301 549. The full statement is in the theme's accessibility.txt.
This covers the theme. Each site should publish its own accessibility statement covering its content, and link to it from every page with Footer › Accessibility statement page.
What the theme takes care of
- Contrast: every text and background pair reaches 4.5:1 (3:1 for borders and focus indicators) in both color schemes, for any brand colors (in themes that offer Guarantee readable contrast, unless you turn it off). Blocks with a background color get matching text colors; blocks with a background image get a scrim.
- Keyboard: everything works from the keyboard, with a skip link, a visible two-tone focus ring, and menus, viewers and dialogs that trap and return focus correctly.
- Structure: landmarks, one main heading per page, headings in order, labelled forms and buttons.
- Links: links in text are always underlined.
- Motion: animations stop when a visitor's device asks for reduced motion.
- Windows high contrast mode: supported (forced colors).
- Reflow and zoom: pages work at 320 pixels wide and with text enlarged to 200%.
- Consistent help: contact, accessibility and privacy links appear in the same place on every page.
- Languages: the page language and text direction follow the site's locale.
What editors need to do
The theme cannot fix content. Editors remain responsible for:
- alt text for images and assets (including partner logos), or marking them decorative;
- meaningful link text ("Read the 1912 report", not "click here");
- captions and transcripts for audio and video;
- headings in order inside HTML blocks;
- a contrast check if they turn Guarantee readable contrast off.
The Style book page template shows a contrast report for every color pair of your settings.
